As Estheticians we get asked all the time “What is the best foundation?”
Well of course there is no simple answer to that question.
You have to ask yourself, what are the qualities of your own perfect foundation product?
Is it long lasting?
Are you planning on sweating while wearing it or need it to be water resistant for summer activities?
What kind of finish do you like? Matte or dewy? This could depend on the condition of your skin or just be your personal preference.
What kind of coverage are you looking for? Natural or full coverage? Again this is often a preference issue or could depend on your lifestyle or if you have imperfections you’d like to conceal.
Are you searching for the perfect color/shade? Odds are there are several different shades that will look great on your skin, especially if you prefer a mineral foundation powder. We suggest trying it on in daylight and even wearing it home from the store before you commit. Your car’s rear-view mirror can be very telling as well with all that natural light. Furthermore, if you spend a lot of time outdoors during the warmer months it’s a good idea to keep a few shades on hand for a smooth transition between seasons.
Is it easy to apply? This could also depend on your skin type and preference and is especially important to consider if you often don’t have a lot of time to do your makeup or you often find yourself applying it while sitting in traffic. (Yes, that’s a thing.lol) A full coverage liquid can take a little more effort to apply than a tinted moisturizer or BB cream and pressed powder foundations are easier to use for some than a loose powder foundation.
Cost! Are you willing to spend more for it, or are you more excited about the hunt for a bargain that will perform the same?
Is it convenient to buy? Do you have to special order online or can you buy at a store?
Natural vs synthetic ingredients? What does it provide for skin health? This is a big one to consider, especially if you wear foundation every day. What you put on your skin daily has a big impact on your skin’s health. If you are buying it from a professional, they should be able to counsel you on what ingredients would benefit you and why. Or you can always do your own research. The first 2 or 3 ingredients usually make up the majority of the product so don’t be afraid to google them or consult ingredient databases online.
