Even though Brazilian waxing is a very popular service in the spa industry, there are still a lot of misconceptions about it. If you are thinking about getting one but are worried about all the unknowns, relax, I’m about to tell you everything you need to know to help you feel comfortable with the process.
Some may ask why someone would want to wax off all of the hair “down there”…well after speaking with some extremely experienced experts on Brazilian waxing, I found that these are the top three reasons they are so popular.
Cleanliness and personal hygiene. A lot of women just prefer the no-hair situation to just keep things clean.
Convenience. Let’s face it, shaving is a serious chore at times especially during swimsuit season.
Personal or partner preference. Yes, some do it solely for their partner, however if you’re not comfortable with it we don’t suggest doing it for this reason.
If you are thinking about getting a Brazilian for the first time the most important thing to know is to go to an experienced professional with a good reputation who comes recommended for this service. A good esthetician will put you at ease and explain the process which takes away a lot of the anxiety of it. Someone with the right experience in Brazilians will get it done quickly and efficiently with as little discomfort as possible.
Here are our other must-know tips for any Brazilian client:
Do not shave beforehand. The hair must be at least a quarter of an inch long or the wax will not be able to grasp the hair and it just won’t work. We know that if you are used to shaving on a regular basis it can be a pain to grow it out, but it’s an absolute must.
Preparation is key. Exfoliate lightly before your appointment but don’t apply an lotions.
If you’re worried about pain take an Ibuprofen about 30 minutes before your appointment. Avoid alcohol before your appointment, it may seem like it would ease the pain but it actually makes it worse as alcohol can thin the blood.
Communication is extremely important. The term “Brazilian” means different things to different people. Let your Esthetician know exactly how much hair you’d like removed.
You may want to avoid scheduling a Brazilian wax while you’re on your period. It can be done, but you may find that you are much more sensitive during that time of the month.
After your Brazilian wax be sure to wear cotton underwear that is breathable.
Avoid anything that causes friction like scrubbing the area or using a loofah, exercise or sex for 24 hours after your Brazilian. This will just cause a lot of irritation to the skin.
Avoid soaking in a bathtub, hot tub, lakes or swimming pools for 24 after your wax. Because the hair follicle is open right after a wax you don’t want to introduce any bacteria to the area before the follicle can close up.
When you have an experienced Esthetician, you’ll find that the experience is not scary at all and probably less uncomfortable than you anticipated. The more times you have a Brazilian wax the easier it gets since the hair becomes thinner over time with repeated waxing.
So relax and just do it!
